Embarking on a photographic journey through the city of Southampton, my project aims to unearth the hidden narratives within seemingly ordinary moments of everyday life. With a Canon camera, my lens becomes a storyteller, capturing the unspoken tales of the city. The core philosophy of my work is to delve deeply into different areas, seeking out issues or stories that often remain obscured beneath the surface.
The foundation of the project lies in capturing the essence of ordinary life – but with a twist. I want to peel back the layers, revealing deeper meanings and untold stories within my photographs. Southampton, like any city, holds a multitude of tales waiting to be discovered, especially moments that look ordinary at first glance but carry meaning when you look again.
I decided to use a 40mm lens to capture great detail while keeping a wide story within the shot. It worked perfectly for the close-to-mid-range photos I wanted, and during the test phase I noticed it helped capture every aspect I wanted and worked well with the lighting, giving off a grungy vibe.
In the early stages I experimented with test pictures, attempting to grasp the nuances of my surroundings. Analysing these test shots was a crucial learning process, providing valuable insight into the art of storytelling through imagery. As I delved further, I spent countless hours traversing the diverse landscapes of Southampton, deliberately exploring with a keen eye for that elusive shining light – the perfect picture.
The project unfolded gradually as I meticulously selected six images that resonated most with the stories I wanted to tell. Each became a visual narrative, encapsulating the struggles, problems and quiet moments that define life and global issues within Southampton. I'm driven by the belief that every corner of the city holds a unique story waiting to be unveiled, urging viewers to see beyond the surface and discover the rich tapestry of narratives hidden within the ordinary.
